Portal view

After respite, and breaking fast in the Benedictine monastery of La Reole, SW France, a pilgrim would have left through this portal facing full south. He would have seen the vertical lines play with the horizon. He would have looked up to follow the curves to the top, then his eyes would have been led down to the symbol he recognised as representing the sun, and the Creator. With a seed of this image and thought implanted, he would have then descended the steps to the river valley, turned west and begun another days pilgrimage toward Compostella.
