In 1794, the ten month reign of ‘la Terreur’, during the French Revolution, ended. Two years later a Master bellmaker, Antoine Paccard, created his founderys first bell to replace one missing in the Church of the Visitation of Our Lady of Quintel, Haute Savoie. On it he inscribed:
“Si je survis à la Terreur, ce’st pour annoncer le bonheur.”
“If I survive the Terror, it is to preach happiness.”
The bell continues to ring.
