The mantel clock

dust motes float in sunlight shaft
some settle on mahogany cupboard
fascinating artifacts lie untidily on top
a squat chinese man with a smug smile
silver framed sepia child
dusty rose in a cutglass vase
the mantle clock
gold trimmed circle encased in curving wood

a high backed faded chair with wings beckons
i plump its lumpy cushion
fidget and settle
listen as tick tocking fills the room
echoing with increasing volume
when a distant memory
its rhyming heartbeat
rocks me peacefully sleepily
cocooning in mothers comforting womb
