To everyone else she was invisible, but JM saw her straightaway. He was attracted by her pure humility. We were just arriving at the station to take a train home after a day in the city. She was sitting on the ground, crosslegged, wearing a long black tunic and headscarf. Before her were a few coins in a cup. She was begging.
JM had nothing in his pocket except his railway ticket. He knew that I had a five euro note in my purse but he did’nt want to take it from me because I was saving it for a cup of tea on the train. We had just bought some chocolate croissants to eat with our tea. He took two from the packet and put them into the womans hands. She looked up and thanked him.
JM was profoundly touched by the look in her eyes. He recieved from her ten fold what he had given. When he came home he carved this simple statuette and she reminds him of humility everyday.
